Salinas Girl Scouts Clean Up the Coast and Visit Local Landfill


Thanks in part to a generous grant from the Harden Foundation Girl Scouts from the Alisal Program Center (APC) have embraced environmental conservation across the board. By promoting recycling, composting and waste reduction at the center, they have extended their commitment to the environment by conducting weekly cleanups at Closter Park in Salinas.

Learning about the environment and recycling was part of their STEM-based learning activities at the Center. As part of this experience, 25 Girl Scouts took a fieldtrip to a local landfill to learn where things “go” after they’re discarded, as well as many other activities including bi-weekly storm drain painting and participating in a coastal cleanup day at Carr Lake.

 Girl Scouts were provided reusable gloves and reusable buckets to pick up trash that people had discarded around the lake. This hands-on experience gave the girls insight into the fragility of the environment and what kind of impact cans, plastic bags and cigarette butts can have on the surroundings, including birds and local wildlife. With funding from the Harden Foundation and other grants for STEM-based learning activities, girls are provided an opportunity to expand their leadership skills and build their confidence, all while doing good within their community and beyond.


The Alisal Program Center (APC) is an after school program, open Monday through Friday for girls ages 5 to 17 and is supported by our generous community partners. The APC is open to all girls in the Salinas area and offers a wide variety of experiences, including weekly troop meetings, homework assistance, STEM-based learning and community service are just a few of the exciting things girls do here. 

Landfill Visit


The Harden Foundation was established in 1963 by Ercia and Gene Harden. Their hard work and good fortune in agriculture in the Salinas Valley produced the legacy that has, through their foresight and generosity, become today’s Harden Foundation. The Harden Foundation is committed to funding to a variety of qualified nonprofit organizations in Monterey County and hopes to continue to develop other resources that will benefit and aid them in their missions to serve local communities.
