Creative S’more Combinations

August 10th is National S’mores day! While this tasty treat brings back memories of cozy summer nights around a campfire, traditional s’mores are actually rooted in Girl Scout history! The first recorded recipe for a S’more was published in the 1927 Girl Scout Guidebook “Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.” A troop leader named Loretta Scott Crew was credited to the recipe, who would reportedly make them by the campfire to feed hungry Girl Scouts!

In the recipe, Loretta calls for graham crackers, plain chocolate and marshmallows. She instructs to toast the marshmallows to a “crispy, gooey state,” placing the marshmallow on top of a chocolate bar and in between two graham crackers to create a “Some More.” It’s unclear when the name was shortened to simply “S’more,” but recipes for “Some Mores” are found in various Girl Scout publications until 1971.

Get ready to honor your Girl Scout heritage and try out one of these creative combinations for National S’mores Day! Is your troop celebrating? Send us your photos to media@girlscoutsccc.org.
